Cleanings & Routine Exams

Preventive Care

Cleanings & routine exams that actually feel good.

Twice-a-year cleanings keep your smile bright, your gums healthy, and small problems from turning into big ones.

Personalized care

What it is

Overview.

A professional cleaning removes the hardened plaque (called tartar or calculus) that even the best home brushing cannot reach. Combined with a careful exam, appropriate digital X-rays, and an oral cancer screening, your routine visit is one of the most cost-effective ways to support long-term oral health.

Our hygienists work with a gentle ultrasonic scaler followed by a careful hand finish and a polish. If you have not been in for a while, do not worry — there is no judgment here, just a friendly catch-up and a plan to get you back on track.

Is it right for you?

Who should book a cleaning?

Not sure if you are a candidate? A 20-minute consult with Dr. Patel is the fastest way to find out what treatment options fit your goals, health, and timeline.

Book a consultation
  • Anyone overdue for their last visit (more than six months)
  • Patients who feel bleeding or sensitivity when brushing or flossing
  • Adults noticing bad breath that brushing does not fix
  • Coffee, tea, red-wine, or smoking habits that stain enamel
  • Children, teens, and adults of every age — preventive care is for everyone

How it works

What a visit looks like

  1. Step 01

    1 · Review & X-rays

We update your medical history, take low-radiation digital X-rays (typically once a year), and check for changes since your last visit.

  2. Step 02

    2 · Gentle scaling

Ultrasonic and hand instruments lift tartar above and below the gumline. Numbing is rare for a routine cleaning but available if needed.

  3. Step 03

    3 · Polish & floss

A polish removes surface stain and leaves teeth feeling smooth. We finish with thorough flossing and rinse.

  4. Step 04

4 · Exam with Dr. Patel

Dr. Patel reviews your X-rays and intraoral photos with you and explains anything that needs attention — clearly, with options.

  5. Step 05

    5 · Plan & schedule

You leave with a fresh smile and a six-month recall on the calendar. If treatment is recommended, you get an estimate before you go.

Why it works

Why it matters

  • Catches cavities while they are still tiny and easy to fix
  • Helps reduce the risk of gum disease — a leading cause of adult tooth loss
  • Removes coffee, tea, and wine stains for a brighter smile
  • Early oral cancer screening included
  • Can reduce long-term costs by catching problems earlier
  • Better breath, calmer gums, and fewer dental surprises

Aftercare

Right after your cleaning

You can eat and drink immediately. Some patients notice mild sensitivity for a day or two if a lot of tartar was removed — sensitive-formula toothpaste helps. Keep brushing twice a day, floss once, and we will see you in six months.

Common questions

FAQs about cleanings & routine exams.

Still have a question? Call us at 704-544-8860 or send a note — we are happy to talk it through.

How often should I have a professional cleaning?
Every six months is the right rhythm for most adults and kids. Patients with a history of gum disease may benefit from three- or four-month cleanings — we will tailor that to you.
Will a cleaning hurt?
Routine cleanings are usually comfortable for most patients. If you have sensitive teeth or a lot of tartar build-up, let us know and we can adjust technique or use a topical numbing gel.
Do I really need X-rays at every visit?
No — typically we take a small set of bitewing X-rays once a year and a fuller series every few years, depending on your oral health and risk factors. We only recommend X-rays when they are clinically useful.
What if I have not been to the dentist in years?
Come on in. The first visit will be longer and gentler — we may recommend a deeper cleaning if there is significant tartar — but we promise no lectures.
